Apercebendo-se da verdade que tinha descoberto, deixou-se cair no sofá, esmagado pela incredulidade da revelação. Ainda atónito, inclinou-se para a frente num movimento repentino e passou as mãos pela cara, esfregando a barba em gestos desorientados e compulsivos.
Levantou-se. Tinha de fazer alguma coisa.
Pegou no telefone mas ao marcar os primeiros números aperecebeu-se que o nervosismo lhe traía a firmeza dos dedos e a sua voz encontrava-se demasiado trémula para falar.
Pensou em escrever-lhe mas as palavras e o pensamento não lhe saíam com coerência e, além do mais, a caneta e o papel pareceram-lhe demasiado ridículos para tal situação.
Olhou então para os vidros embaciados da janela, salpicados pelas gotas de chuva que escorriam para o parapeito com a velcidade de um rio em fúria – estava uma noite dos diabos… Instintivamente, virou a cabeça em direcção ao relógio ao lado da lareira – 01:48.
Por uns momentos, fechou os olhos e concentrou-se na sua respiração ofegante, sentindo o ritmo cardíaco a acelerar a cada segundo que passava. Nessa noite não dormiria, aliás, era impossível sequer descansar contendo aquela bomba-relógio iminente dentro dele.
«Não, isto não pode ficar para amanhã. É demasiado importante para ficar amordaçado pelo silêncio da noite. Tenho que fazer alguma coisa!», pensou.
E, tão rápido quanto o seu pensamento, agarrou no casaco amarrotado que repousava ao lado do sofá e, sem mais hesitações, saíu porta fora, mergulhando profundamente na escuridão da madrugada.
